Today Thrifty Jinxy is taking part in the internet Blackout* to protest SOPA and PIPA. If you're not familiar with these acronyms, they are pieces of legislation being brought before congress that will effectively censor the internet and put most blogs and many other of your favorite web sites out of business. While the names Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (SOPA), may sound like good things, the details of these laws would mean that those guilty of actual online piracy would easily find ways to circumvent any restrictions, while upstanding web sites (and blogs) would suffer. As a very basic example, if a reader were to leave a comment on Thrifty Jinxy and included copyright protected material in that comment, lets say the lyrics to their favorite pop song, we could end up being shut down PERMANENTLY! And not only shut down, we could be subject to thousands or even millions of dollars in legal fees, even if we accepted our site being shut down. Every one of the thousands/millions of other blogs out there would be in the same situation.
